The Scandalous Secret History of the Chateau Marmont

Chateau Marmont Hotel In Los Angeles

Chateau Marmont Hotel In Los Angeles

Perched above the Sunset Strip like a fairy-tale castle, the Chateau Marmont seems to come from another world entirely. An apartment-house-turned-hotel, it has been the backdrop for generations of gossip and folklore.

For nearly a century, Hollywood's Chateau Marmont hotel has kept guard over Sunset Boulevard, providing a discreet haven for celebrities, rock stars, writers, and artists to let loose and be themselves in private, away from prying eyes. It might not have been the most glamorous or expensive hotel in L.A. but it certainly was—and still is—the most infamous. Anyone who was anyone in this town had a Chateau Marmont story to tell. As 1930s studio boss Harry Cohn — who kept a suite at the hotel for extramarital antics with starlets — once told his Columbia Pictures actors: “If you must get into trouble, do it at the Marmont.”

It was in 1926 when Fred Horowitz, a prominent Los Angeles attorney, chose the site at Marmont Lane and Sunset Boulevard to construct an apartment building. Horowitz had recently traveled to Europe for inspiration and returned to California with photos of a Gothic Chateau along the Loire River.

In 1927, Horowitz commissioned his brother-in-law, European-trained architect Arnold A. Weitzman, to design the seven-story, L-shaped building based on his French photos.

When deciding upon a name for the building, Chateau Sunset and Chateau Hollywood were rejected in favor of Chateau Marmont, after the small street running across the front of the property. On February 1, 1929, Chateau Marmont opened its doors to the public as the newest residence of Hollywood. Local newspapers described the Chateau as "Los Angeles's newest, finest and most exclusive apartment house superbly situated, close enough to active businesses to be accessible and far enough away to insure quiet and privacy.

Due to the high rents and inability to keep tenants for long-term commitments during the Great Depression, Horowitz sold the apartment building in 1931 to Albert E. Smith, co-founder of Vitagraph Studios, for $750,000 in cash (equivalent to $12,760,000 in 2020). Smith converted the building into a hotel, an investment which benefitted from the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

The apartments became suites with kitchens and living rooms. The property was also refurbished with antiques from depression-era estate sales. During the 1930s, the hotel was managed by former silent film actress Ann Little.

During World War II, the hotel served as an air-raid shelter for residents in the surrounding area. From about 1942 to 1963 the Chateau was owned by Erwin Brettauer, a German banker who had funded films in Weimar Germany, and was noted for allowing black guests, breaking the long-standing colour line in Hollywood and Beverly Hills hotels.

Designed and constructed to be earthquake-proof, Chateau Marmont survived major earthquakes in 1933, 1953, 1971, 1987, and 1994 without sustaining any major structural damage. Nine Spanish cottages, as well as a swimming pool, were built next to the hotel in the 1930s and were acquired by the hotel in the 1940s.

Business was good for the hotel, although by the 1960s, the building was in disrepair, and the owners attempted to sell it multiple times. News articles about the hotel from the 1960s and '70s described it as an "elderly castle", a "dowdy hotel", "rundown", and "shabby."

After sitting on the market for two years, the Chateau was sold in 1975 to a real estate development firm Sarlot-Kantarjian, for $1.1 million. Sarlot-Kantarjian planned to expand the hotel with a new wing. They repaired and upgraded many elements of the hotel, but tried to stay true to the hotel's character and history.

In 1976, after their acquisition and improvements began, the Chateau was named a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. In The New York Times, writer Quentin Crisp praised the Chateau's "avoiding undue modernization and stayed deliberately in the romantic past."

Given its close association with Tinseltown, it seems appropriate that the Chateau Marmont opened in 1929, the same year as the very first Academy Awards ceremony. Few places evoke old Hollywood glamour quite like the Chateau Marmont hotel on Sunset Boulevard.

The hotel, designated as a cultural landmark in 1976 and has lost none of its sheen, and continues to attract actors young and old, who make use of the property as a party venue, press conference setting, low-key hideaway, or a site of debauchery.

The most famous room in this turreted castle towering over Sunset Boulevard is Room 64, the two-bedroom penthouse suite where Howard Hughes famously spied on starlets in the oval swimming pool below through his binoculars.

This sprawling 3,000 square-foot space has a formal dining room, two bathrooms, two designer-led bedrooms with king and queen-size beds, a dressing area, a working fireplace, a polished marble entrance and grand piano.

Most impressive is the 1,500-square-foot of private wraparound terrace overlooking Hollywood. With other A-list touches that include chauffeur-driven cars and personal trainers, a stay in Room 64 is as glam as it gets and is still a huge draw for the film industry’s elite. Little wonder Hughes was happily holed up here for three years.

In the hotel’s first years it attracted more Californian bluebloods than debauched movie stars; it was the Gardens of Allah across the road that hosted Marlene Dietrich, William Faulkner and F. Scott Fitzgerald, the latter for a full year as his health and career rapidly declined.

Then, in September 1933, Jean Harlow and her third husband Harold Rosson moved into the Chateau for five months. They were in and out of it incessantly, as were unexplained male visitors for Rosson. The pair (and the hotel) got into the papers; from then on, the Chateau rarely left them.

Nicknamed the “Blonde Bombshell,” Jean Harlow was one of Hollywood’s sweethearts and a leading lady of Metro-Golden-Meyer studios. She was pictured most often in bathing suits and skin-draped robes alone or in the arms of doting men.

She spent lots of time at the Chateau, and earned herself a reputation for wearing skin-tight clothes without nothing underneath. Although she was married three times, she not-so-secretly took multiple lovers at the Chateau both for fun and for her career – including, most famously, her co-star Clark Gable.

Nicholas Ray’s Rebel Without a Cause is one of its biggest claims on Hollywood history. In 1952, after catching his second wife in bed with his 13-year-old son from his first marriage, Ray moved into a Chateau bungalow and stayed for nearly eight years.

These bungalows, built on land next to the hotel, have grown to become just as notable as the ornate main building. Ray certainly wrung every last drop of infamy out of his, bedding stars like Marilyn Monroe, Zsa Zsa Gabor and Joan Crawford, and preying on Rebel actors Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo when they were underage. The film’s script was written and rehearsed in and around the bungalow; Ray even had the space reproduced on a studio lot and worked into the film itself.

Sharon Tate and Roman Polanski moved into the Chateau in the late sixties when they were young, besotted newlyweds, hosting parties for friends including Mia Farrow and Jack Nicholson. The pair moved into an actual house when Tate became pregnant in 1969, where that August, she and four others were murdered by members of the Manson Family. Polanski then spent his last night in America at the Chateau in 1978, before fleeing to Europe to evade charges of raping a 13-year-old girl.

Other tales are more light-hearted. On his second visit, the Austrian director Billy Wilder was put up in the antechamber to the lobby’s female bathrooms, on account of no rooms being available at short notice. Vivian Leigh was a bit more discerning about her digs, bringing along Renoirs and Picassos to “brighten” her suite up.

Humphrey Bogart moved his mother Maud into the Chateau in 1938, when she was in her early 70s; she would spend her days walking up to strangers on Sunset Boulevard, telling them exactly whose mother she was. And in the late 40s and 50s, long after her film career had wilted, Greta Garbo would troop back to the Chateau after a day of walking in the hills, carrying armfuls of wildflowers with which to decorate her suite.

On 3 January 2004, famed Vogue and Tatler photographer Helmut Newton, also lost his life at the Chateau Marmont, where he had retained a residence for a few years and shot many photographs. While leaving the hotel, the 83-year-old’s Cadillac sped out of control and hit a wall.

Lest you think it’s all hedonism and naughty behavior at the Chateau, some more touching stories have taken place there. After a near-fatal car crash in 1956, Montgomery Clift was nursed back to health at the Chateau by none other than the divine Elizabeth Taylor, who, at the scene of the accident, had saved him from choking on his own tooth by picking it out of his tongue.

The Night John Belushi Died

John Belushi and Robin Williams

Those who have lived long-term at the hotel include Greta Garbo and Robert De Niro, but it is perhaps more famous for one particular a notable death.

The most famous person ever to die at the Chateau was the comedian John Belushi who, in 1982 at the age of 32, overdosed in Bungalow 3. His death now accompanies almost every mention of the hotel.

After spending the evening with Robin Williams and Robert De Niro, who was also staying at the Chateau, Belushi was injected with a lethal concoction of cocaine and heroin by a female companion and discovered the next morning by his personal trainer.

The ensuing scandal rumbled on for years, reignited first by a criminal investigation and then by a biography of Belushi written by Bob Woodward, whose description of the bungalow as ‘seedy’ on the book’s dust jacket prompted the Chateau’s then owners, Raymond Sarlot and Karl Kantarjian, to sue for $18 million (the lawsuit was dropped when Woodward apologised).

why history is important

"One of the most iconic films of the decade was largely written, conceived, cast, rehearsed, and, in some ways, lived on the grounds of the Marmont,". In 1952 writer-director Nicholas Ray moved into a bungalow after finding his second wife, actress Gloria Grahame, in bed with his 13-year-old son Tony from his first marriage.

He rebounded quickly, with stars like Joan Crawford, Marilyn Monroe, Jayne Mansfield, and Zsa Zsa Gabor. Not long after he got his studio pitch for Rebel Without a Cause approved and began meeting actors and screenwriters, Ray met James Dean. T

hen, writer Stewart Stern entered the mix and began work on a screenplay. Ray was big on entertaining industry folk in his bungalow and hosted Sunday gatherings where Dean, Dennis Hopper, and other actors would often show up. As the movie's script progressed, Ray started to use his bungalow as a rehearsal space.

Not just a hangout for those in the entertainment industries, the Chateau has also provided inspiration for writers, filmmakers, and musicians. Lana Del Ray name checked the hotel in “Off to the Races”. The Day of the Locust and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were both written here, and Hunter S. Thompson and Dorothy Parker both produced work while staying at the hotel. While it has never been confirmed, it is assumed that the hotel was the inspiration for The Eagles’ “Hotel California.”

They became famous as the endearing Lucy and Ricky Ricardo on I Love Lucy, but behind the scenes, the marriage of Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball was hardly as cute—or funny. He would constantly cheat, she would find out, they would fight, and he would escape to a suite at the Marmont.

Eventually they would make up, then the whole cycle would start again. One time, according to legend, the two were arguing on the terrace of his suite when a briefcase was thrown. It burst open and a shower of cash rained down Sunset Boulevard.

Then there was Led Zeppelin and their visit in 1968, the band's loud partying, constant flow of girls (they stole a food cart to transport nude girls from one room to another), and repeated calls to room service for more alcohol got them moved into a bungalow.

In the early 60s, the actor and singer Richard Harris was banned forever when he returned to the hotel drunk and went around banging on guest doors yelling that a nuclear bomb had dropped. The next morning he found his belongings on the curb.

And then there was Jim Morrison, who stayed at the Marmont in 1970, a year before his death. In addition to the booze and drugs, he had a habit of swinging between windows and balconies using tree limbs and drainpipes. He tried to do it here and fell two stories.

The Chateau has always been a refuge; in some cases a fortress. With only 63 rooms, it affords creative types much-needed privacy, and attracts those looking to get over domestic strife, or conversely, enjoy domestic bliss. Graham Nash, who described it as “womb-like”, stayed there for five months in 1971 after breaking up with Joni Mitchell. His song Strangers Room is an ode to the bungalow he settled in.

John Wayne arrived in 1945 with his soon-to-be second wife while still in the process of divorcing his first, and Jeff Goldblum got married to his third wife Emilie Livingston there in 2014. In 1968, the Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham took advantage of the Chateau’s abundance of kitchens and cooked a full Christmas dinner for the rest of the band.

All these names get exhausting after a while — and they barely scratch the surface. Take a deep breath: Lucille Ball, Jarvis Cocker, Sean Connery, Errol Flynn, Whoopi Goldberg, David Hockney, Dustin Hoffman, John Hurt, Bianca Jagger, Diane Keaton, Grace Kelly, Sergio Leone, Arthur Miller, Paul Newman, Peter O’Toole, Gram Parsons and Phil Spector have all stayed at the Chateau at one time or another. And the list could (and does) go on an awful lot longer.
