The Global Cult That Is Al Capone...

Gangsters From Chicago

Gangsters From Chicago

There’s a reason why the name Al Capone is still so well known today. The stout, cigar-chomping mobster has inspired countless films, pieces of literature, musicians, and, of course, criminals.

While there were comparable crime figures in the 1920s, the Chicago mobster truly stood out from the pack. In terms of his impact on the underworld, Capone rose from being a street thug to the FBI’s “Public Enemy No. 1” in the span of about a decade. Al Capone was one of the most notorious gangsters of all time.

During Prohibition, he lived the fast life, rolled in money, and committed crime after crime he thought he’d get away with. Prohibition had opened up vast new opportunities for Chicago criminals and Capone took full advantage of them, controlling illicit stills, organizing liquor distribution, and bribing police and politicians.

Gangsters In The 1920s

Public Enemy #1 Alphonse Capone

Alphonse Gabriel Capone was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1899, to Italian immigrants. His parents, Gabriele Capone and Teresa Raiola, found working-class jobs and settled into their new lives. Capone, however, had trouble fitting in and was expelled from school at age 14 for hitting a teacher. After he left school, Capone tried his hand at odd jobs, but nothing stuck.

Capone’s infamous nickname was Scarface. In 1917, his left cheek was slashed with a razor during a brawl at the Harvard Inn. Capone slighted a female patron. Her brother retaliated and gave young Al three permanent scars. In many interviews and photographs years later, Capone would often shield the scarred part of his face.

When asked about it, he would make it sound like the scars were war wounds even though he was never a military man. When he rose to prominence in the mafia world, the press dubbed him as “Scarface.” It was a moniker he deeply disliked. In the criminal world, Capone was known as the “Big Fellow.” His closest friends and associates called him “Snorky,” a slang term for spiffy.

Gangsters In The 1920s

At age 18, Capone met and married Mae Coughlin. Soon after, the couple had their first child, Albert Francis “Sonny” Capone. Sonny’s birth gave Capone pause—briefly—to consider making an honest living. The family moved to Baltimore where Capone intended to become a bookkeeper - working the numbers on the right side of the law.

As an aspiring young criminal, Capone ran roughshod on whatever gamble he could make. From loansharking to racketeering to gunning down the competition, it was his ambition that propelled him forward. But it wasn’t a dangerous shootout that did him in. Before Prohibition officially started in 1920, Capone was already making a name for himself when Johnny Torrio — someone he considered a mentor — recruited him to join Colosimo’s crew in Chicago.

Capone couldn’t resist the allure of the gangster life, and when Torrio asked Capone to move to Chicago to help run his mob empire, it was an offer that Capone couldn’t refuse.

Johnny “The Fox” Torrio, who was just getting started building an empire. Torrio introduced Capone to Frankie Yale—and his first real taste of the underworld. Yale owned a number of clubs where patrons could go to drink, gamble and pay for sex, and gave Capone a job as a bouncer and bartender. The dark side quickly caught up to Torrio though.

In 1925 he barely survived an assassination attempt by rival mobsters Hymie “The Pole” Weiss, Vincent “The Schemer” Drucci and George “Bugs” Moran outside his home in Illinois. After spending three weeks in the hospital, and even more time in prison, Torrio wanted out. He decided to leave Chicago, handing over control of his empire to Capone who was 26 at that time, as his replacement.

Capone, as a mafia boss, expanded “the outfit” as he would often refer to his underworld empire. Not long after, Capone would become one of the most prominent mobsters in the US. By some accounts, his network raked in over $100 million net worth each year. The biggest percentage came from bootlegging, then gambling, followed by prostitution, and then racketeering.

Capone soon became an international personality. He wasn’t apologetic for his way of life or how he made his living. When interviewed about his lifestyle, he would claim that he was just doing a public service since 90 percent of the folks in Cook County enjoy drinking and gambling.

But always there was the outward appearance of respectability. A disciple of "gentleman gangster" Johnny Torrio, Capone considered himself a benefactor of the Italian immigrant community, his bootlegging operations a source of jobs for the poor. The son of Italian immigrants himself, Capone lived in a modest house in a middle-class Chicago neighborhood with his wife and son, his mother and siblings. He told neighbours he was a secondhand furniture dealer.

Capone was a natural at making money and quickly expanded the business. By the mid-1920s, Capone was reportedly taking home nearly $60 million annually ($891 million in today’s dollars), and his wealth continued to grow, reportedly topping $100 million ($1.5 billion in today’s dollars).

As Capone’s empire grew, so did his penchant for violence. The bodies piled up in Chicago, and most had Capone’s fingerprints all over them. The feds, however, couldn’t make charges of violence stick against Capone. But something happened in 1927—miles away from Chicago—that would prove to be a turning point.

On May 16, 1927, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in U.S. v. Sullivan that “gains from illicit traffic in liquor are subject to the income tax would be taxable”. It was just the ruling the feds needed.

Gangsters From The 20s

Gangland War In Chicago Escalates

By 1928 the "New Yorker" had already dubbed Capone "the greatest gang leader in history." His brutality was legendary even during his lifetime. It was widely known - though almost impossible to prove - that he engineered dozens of murders. He escalated gangland warfare to establish Chicago's supremacy over his native Brooklyn, and he operated profitable prostitution rings and speakeasies.

Al Capone took the image of the gun-wielding outlaw and modernized it for a new age. He made himself into the king of the gangsters — who served as an uncompromising middle finger to the Prohibition Era.

Chicago Murder Rate

St. Valentines Day Massacre Feb 14th 1929

In 1928, finally fed up, the Secretary of the Treasury summoned Elmer Irey and told him to simply “get Capone.” Even as Irey was investigating Capone, the violence continued. The lawlessness culminated on February 14, 1929. Capone was in Miami at the time of the shootings but was immediately blamed for what came to be known as the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. On the day of the murders, witnesses saw four men enter the garage: two of the men were dressed as police officers. The "officers" ordered Moran's gang to line up against the wall where they were hit with a spray of machine-gun and shotgun bullets: 70 rounds of ammo were fired. All seven men inside died - most of them immediately.

One of the victims, Frank Gusenberg, survived long enough to allegedly tell police, "No one shot me." What triggered the dispute? Likely territory. Moran controlled the North Side of Chicago, while Capone controlled the South Side. Moran escaped the violence, but just barely: He was late to the scene and missed the shootings by minutes. A few days later, he allegedly told reporters, “Only Capone kills like that.” It was a line so famous that it made it into the movies. Capone allegedly reponded, "The only man who kills like that is Bugs Moran."

There were no witnesses who lived to tell the tale, there was no evidence, and no one was ever prosecuted. However, the feds believed that Capone was responsible, and in 1930, Capone was dubbed “Public Enemy Number One,” a label he reportedly hated (his older brother, Ralph “Bottles” Capone would earn the title “Public Enemy Number Three”). Capone grew more bold, believing that he was untouchable. He failed to answer a subpoena to appear before a federal grand jury, claiming he had bronchial pneumonia and was confined to bed rest.

He was arrested on contempt charges after prosecutors produced evidence that he had been gambling at the track and cruising in the Bahamas. He was released on bond but was re-arrested on concealed weapons charges and sentenced to prison at Philadelphia’s Eastern State Penitentiary, where he reportedly lived in luxury amid French furniture, plush rugs and a Victrola radio in his cell.

Al Capone Chicago

During this time, the feds were quietly building a case against Capone. Despite his public and extravagant lifestyle, Capone never filed a federal income tax return, claiming that he had no taxable income. IRS Special Agent Frank Wilson and the “T-Men” followed the money, gathering evidence that Capone had made millions of dollars on income that was never taxed.

It paid off: Capone was indicted on 22 counts of federal income tax evasion. He wasn’t alone: his brother, Ralph, Jake “Greasy Thumb” Guzik, Frank Nitti and others were also charged. Capone bragged that he had reached a plea agreement that would have sent him to jail for just two years. The judge refused to accept the deal, and the case went to trial.

Capone was found guilty on October 17, 1931. One week later, on October 24, 1931, Capone was sentenced to a then unheard 11 years in prison. He was fined $50,000 ($798,055 in today’s dollars), charged court costs and ordered to pay back taxes of $215,000 (now, $3,431,640). He immediately appealed and was denied a rehearing.

Capone’s first prison stop after his conviction was Atlanta. Initially, Capone bribed prison officials to get what he wanted, just as he had done in Philadelphia. When he was found out, he was punished by being relocated to Alcatraz. Alcatraz proved to be Capone’s undoing.

The warden, James Aloysius Johnston, wasn’t as easily swayed as those Capone had previously encountered. When Johnston asked Capone his name, the mobster allegedly responded, “You know who I am.” Johnston is said to have retorted, “Here you are now known as AZ-85.” Capone eventually admitted, “It looks like Alcatraz has got me licked.”

Capone spent more than four years at Alcatraz. During his sentence, his health eventually got the best of him: He had contracted syphilis years before, and it worsened, leading to “intermittent mental disturbances.” In 1937, he again appealed his sentence, this time to District Court, arguing that his verdict had been inconsistent. The appeal was dismissed.

Capone moved again in 1939, this time to a mental hospital, to serve out the remainder of his sentence before retiring to Florida. Before his death, his physician determined that he had deteriorated to the point where he had the mental capacity of a 12-year-old. Capone, once the most feared man in America, died on January 25, 1947, at the age of 48.

Capone had contracted syphilis, which led to his mental incapacitation and contributed to his eventual death. Syphilis is an infection usually spread by sexual contact.

Common symptoms include lesions, lymph node enlargement, fever, sore throat, hair loss, fatigue, weight loss and headaches. Less common symptoms include inflammation of the liver, joints or optic nerve, kidney disease and corneal scarring.

According to the Mayo Clinic, when diagnosed and treated early, syphilis is easy to cure. But untreated syphilis can spread throughout the body and damage the brain, heart and central nervous system — as happened with Capone.

According to the FBI website, Capone developed “paresis derived from syphilis,” which is “a problem with mental function due to damage to the brain from untreated syphilis.”In 1946, a physician and psychiatrist examined Capone and concluded he had the mental capacity of a 12-year-old.

He died shortly thereafter of stroke and pneumonia.

Gangsters From Chicago

After Capone’s death in 1947, Mae Capone never remarried. She and Sonny continued to live in Florida, though they sold Capone’s mansion shortly after his death. Sonny worked various jobs around the Miami area — used car salesman, tire distributor, apprentice printer and even ran a restaurant with his mother, according to the Florida Star.

Sonny Capone married Diane Ruth Casey in 1941 and had four daughters — Veronica, Teresa, Barbara and Patricia. They divorced in 1964 and he remarried twice but never had any more children. He relocated to northern California. Sonny died in 2004, survived by his daughters and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Most criminal empires were cash-based operations back in the day and for obvious reasons. As a result, Al Capone’s net worth and the earnings of his ‘Outfit’ remain somewhat hard to pin down. Of course, that hasn’t stopped numerous experts or government entities from trying.

According to one government report, the Outfit was making approximately US$50 million a year from illegal liquor, US$25 million from gambling, and about US$10 million from drugs and prostitution during the mid-1920s. Experts have also suggested that Al Capone’s net worth hovered around the US$100 million mark when his empire was at its most vast and powerful. Again, that would be approximately US$1.5 billion in today’s dollars.

At the height of his power, Al Capone had a net worth of US$100 million, which is about US$1.5 billion in today's money. Right before he died, however, Capone supposedly couldn't remember where he'd hidden his fortune. For anyone wondering how an individual might misplace millions of dollars, remember that Al Capone was suffering from syphilis.

As the disease progressed, it began to chip away at his mental faculties. Even when doctors administered penicillin in the early 1940s—an experimental new drug at the time—it was far too late to reverse the damage to Capone’s brain. A year before his death, it was said that he possessed the mentality of a 12-year-old child.
